PREVENTING VARICOSE VEINS

Varicose veins that appear during pregnancy are caused by the increased pressure on your pelvic veins, due to your growing uterus and baby. Some women may develop them during childbirth due to the high pressure exerted during pushing. All this extra pressure makes it difficult for your body to pump the blood from your legs back up to your heart, so it ends up pooling in your lower legs. But before you resign yourself to wearing long pants the rest of your life, there are a few things you can do to prevent them:

Wear Support Hose
Pull on a pair of support stockings to apply pressure to the veins and keep them from bulging outwards.

Stay Hydrated
Drink your eight glasses of water a day (at least) to help prevent varicose veins.

Elevate Your Legs
Whenever you get a chance, sit down and put your feet up. This helps gravity by encouraging the blood to flow back out of your legs.

Don't Stand Still
Avoid standing for long periods of time. If you must stand, shift your weight from one foot to the other every few minutes.

Stay Fit
Be sure to get in your 30 minutes of low-impact exercise several times a week. Activities that strengthen your legs (like walking) will improve circulation and vein strength.

I have them just in my left leg. This is my second pregnancy and they have gotten worse. Nothing helps them. After my first child the veins did go away some.

Varicose veins run on my dad's side of the family. Yes, I inherited those ugly things. Im on my 3rd pregnancy and they have gotten worse. I plan on having them injected. I hate them.

I am very grateful!! I am 41 and on my 3rd pregnancy and have no varicose veins.. I always drink plenty of fluid to stay hydriated.

Its hereditary just like stretch marks....dri all you want, elevate all you want, support hose, etc. It won't matter. No women in my family have varicose veins, and (shamefully) I don't do anything recommended on this list. I'm 40 and this is my 7th pregnancy... one varicose vein...anywh I think you can minimize or make something worse...but if you are going to get them, there is nothing you can do.

The good thing is, after you deliver the varicose veins almost always go away! So don't fret

My grandmother had 12 kids and my mother had 4 Im pregnant with my first and none of us have them. My mother says comfortable shoes are a must and exercise. I think water and elevating your feet is also useful. Personally I lay with my butt against the wall in bed with my feet vertically for half an hour each night it really helps my feet feel better (you should prop yourself up with multiple pillows as laying completely on your back isnt good for the baby). Although my friend got them injected if you already have them and need to get rid of them

I got them when I was 14 years old. Now, in my first pregnancy, in 36, they are worse. I tried the things; they're very useful.

I have to agree that these tips will help with the pain but they will not prevent them or help them go away. I'm an older mom on my 9th pregnancy, and hit up real hard this time with the varicose veins.

My left leg from my knee down is purple. The vericose veins are ten inches long and five and a half inches wide. I am a fitness trainer and am fit and I sit with my legs up when I'm home. Basically, there's nothing else I can do and all of these sites that say the same thing don't mean crap!
