TIPS FOR AN ENERGIZING POWER NAP

If you feel like you can never get enough sleep, especially if you're in your first or third trimester, try power napping. Even a quick 15, 20, or 30-minute nap in the afternoon can leave you as re-energized and rejuvenated as an 8-ounce cup of coffee. Here are some relaxation techniques to help you settle down for a peaceful nap.

Create a Peaceful Environment
Take a few minutes to relax and unwind. Turn off your cell phone, step away from the email, and turn off the TV. Listen to soothing music, meditate, or stretch.

Write to Settle the Mind
Quickly write down anything that's bothering you or that's occupying your mind. Get your to-do list off your chest, make your grocery list, or write about your bad morning at work - unload onto paper anything that may keep you awake.

Block out the Light
Find a dark room where you can nap. If it's just not possible, invest in an eye mask to block out light and some ear plugs to stifle daytime noise. Set the mood for a quiet, relaxing siesta.

Set an Alarm
Set an alarm so you don't oversleep and so you don't have to keep one eye on the clock as you nap.

I also find, having worked shift work to previously getting pregnant, hold something (remote to tv, hair brush ect) in your hand over the edge of the bed or couch and just rest, when your body is about to go into a deep sleep the item will fall and wake you up, thats when you know your nap is over, and you should feel refreshed, good to go make some yummy dinner!

I definately agree that the 15 min naps are best. Last friday I took one b/c I was tired and unmotivated and had things that needed done and ended up getting so much done after I woke up. If it wasn't 9pm once I finished I may have kept going!

25 weeks pregnant and enjoying every minute of it. I'm sleepy a lot even though I do get my rest at night. I work full time so naps are not possible

I'm 25weeks this week and I work a full time job. My problem is when I do get a chance to take a nap. I just can't sleep. It's quiet around me I still can't sleep. So I just feel so tired all the time. If you have any other sugession for me to get some energy and not be sleepy all the time. I am open.

sooo.... how is this power nap thing supposed to work when you have a hyperactive 8yr old, a 2yr old and a 1yr old, and a husband that works 60hrs/wk and live in a 2 bedroom trailer? i've tried all of this and none of it seems to work.

Miracle on 2/12/2011 5:47:06 AM

I'm 24 weeks and I've been taking naps during the day (when needed) and the shorter the nap, the better. If you sleep longer (45, 60, 90 minutes), it's counterprodu Believe me, I know :)

Great help!

Marcia on 12/7/2010 1:27:40 PM

And it's true about setting an alarm-unless I do it, I'm not napping like I could and end up feeling worse afterwards than when I laid down...

renee on 11/24/2010 1:22:34 PM

going to try

mimi on 7/20/2010 4:45:02 PM

this is a great way to not stress out and feel energized afterwards :) try it!

maggie on 2/20/2010 7:00:32 PM

I also agree on taking a nap or sitting in a very comfortable chair and listening to classical or soft jazz. I usually close my eyes and feel my body slowly relaxing.

melinda on 1/12/2010 7:12:39 AM

This is very help full...... cause i know every once in a while I need a good nap! :)
