BEAUTY TREATMENTS DURING PREGNANCY

If you feel like the "pregnancy glow" is nothing more than a myth, you're not alone. Many women find it hard to get comfortable and feel beautiful as their pregnancy progresses, and while spa and beauty treatments are always a great way to relax and rejuvenate, what is safe and what's off limits during pregnancy? Here's the safety scoop on all your favorite indulgences:

Massages
A massage is a great way to ease the tension, soreness, and fatigue that many women feel as they gain more weight and their ligaments stretch to make room for the baby. When choosing a spa, ask if they have massage tables specifically designed for pregnant women. These tables have a cut-out to accommodate your belly, keeping you and your baby safe.

Hair Treatments
Research in this area is limited; however, most studies show the amount of hair dye that is absorbed by your scalp and enters your bloodstream during normal coloring is so small that it won't affect your baby. But if coloring makes you nervous, try highlights instead. They are safer than full coloring because the chemicals are less likely to be applied directly to your scalp.

Manicures and Pedicures
Many women notice their fingernails grow faster and become stronger during pregnancy, so take advantage of this and treat yourself to a few hours at your local nail salon! Pedicures are particularly popular with many moms-to-be as their bellies grow and they are unable to see their feet, much less paint them! Manicures and pedicures are safe during pregnancy, but acrylic fumes in the salon may make you nauseous, so choose a salon with good ventilation and don't spend too much time there.

Take the time to (safely) pamper yourself while you're pregnant - you may not have time after the baby is born! C'mon mom, you deserve it!

This info was very generic but accurate. I'm in the beauty industry, n hav been for 13yrs now. Massages are perfectly fine, on ur stomach or side, the only difference is how you feel comfortable. And as for manis and pedis, you definitely want a well ventilated salon and there is a spot in back of your heel (Achilles tendon) they should not massage, unless its close to your due date and you're ready to deliver. In that case let them massage and squeeze that spot as long as they want. Oh, and as for hair dye... its perfectly fine, but if your still leery, wait til after your 1st trimester :)

i do not think this info was helpful at all. im curious about skin treatments that can help with acne during pregnancy. of corse i know that you cannot use medicated products but is there anything else that can help? my skin was fine before i was pregnant, now im 20wks and cant deal with it any more!!

While I believe in pampering your pregnant self, this information was not helpful at all and the massage info was wrong! Only a masseuse that does prenatal massages while you are side lying should be used. And as a side note, a pedicure late in pregnancy can induce labor. Be careful!

Actually those cut out tables r bad to use when pregnant. U should be doing side laying massages with a certified prenatal massage therapist. Some places offer prenatal but r not certified. As far as getting ur hair done ur perfectly fine but I recommend going to a good place that uses all natural organic products as there is no chemical smells or fumes. It's pricey but totally worth it!!

The massage information is only half right. Do not only ask if the spa has the special pregnancy table! Also ask if they have pillows for a Side Lying massage, which may be safer and more comfortable. As for facials, ask the staff if there are Vitamin A products used in any treatments. If the facial incorporates Vitamin A, don't do it!!!

This info was pretty much common sense I'm with IH I wanted to know more about facials. And you fail to mention that further along you are the more careful they will be with your legs during massage because there are pressure points that could make you go into labor

i liked the info that was given. but i would have liked to know more.

The information giving is something I already knew. I believe in pampering yourself every week before pregnancy, while pregnant and after pregnancy.

crazymama9 on 2/14/2010 9:04:15 AM

I totally agree! I came here to read thinking there would be more information about other treatments.

IH on 1/20/2010 3:18:02 AM

Good information but there are many other treatments people may be curious about such as waxing and facials. In short it was a basic list you deal with.
