How many times have you thought "It's just one glass of wine"? As tempting as a glass of wine or a pint of beer may be after nearly nine months of total abstinence, the risks of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) are very real and very scary.
Children with FAS are born with facial deformities, learning disabilities, and neurological problems. New research is showing that, instead of targeting one area of the brain as previously thought, alcohol actually affects many different parts of the brain. The way alcohol affects an unborn baby is hard to predict. Some children whose mothers drank heavily during pregnancy seem to escape FAS entirely, while others will have subtle or pronounced neurological problems.
Even if a baby is born with a normal appearance and seemingly normal development, problems can crop up later on, including poor judgment, short-term memory problems, attention deficit, and impaired motor skills.
So when you find yourself craving "just one glass," ask yourself what's more important: your baby's health or that one drink?
