Is Accutane Safe?

No, Accutane is not safe during pregnancy. Accutane is an oral medication used to treat severe acne, and is absolutely unsafe to take during pregnancy. It is known to cause serious birth defects such as brain malformations, mental retardation, heart defects, and facial abnormalities including small or missing ears. Accutane is also associated with an increased risk of miscarriage.

If you are pregnant, stop using the medication immediately. If you've taken Accutane beyond the 15th day after conception, your baby has a 35 percent chance of developing birth defects. Unless you've planned your pregnancy, it can be difficult to know exactly when you got pregnant, but remember that conception usually happens two weeks after the first day of your last period. There is also concern that Accutane can remain in your body, potentially causing damage to the fetus long after you've stopped taking the medication. However, recent studies show that there is little to no increased risk for birth defects if the mother discontinues use of the drug within two weeks of conception.
