Repair Damaged Hair

Daily blowdrying and curling or straightening, as well as regular chemical treatments, can leave your hair fried and dull. After all the abuse you put your hair through, it deserves a little pampering and repair. Here are some tips to restore shine, body, and health to your damaged tresses.

  • Use products labeled "gentle." These are safe for daily use and for all hair types.

  • Use a clarifying shampoo once a week to cleanse hair of product buildup that can make your hair dull and lifeless.

  • Use hair-friendly accessories, such as seamless hair elastics that won't tug or break your hair. Try not to put wet hair into a ponytail, but if you must, coat the elastic with a bit of conditioner so it slides easily and won't rip at your strands.

  • Use a thermal protection product that is designed to protect your hair from heat damage. We love Canopy Thermal Protection by Nexxus.

  • Whenever you swim in chlorine or salt water, be sure you wash with a clarifying shampoo afterward. Chlorine and the salt in the water can dry hair and make it very brittle.

  • If your stylist uses a razor to add texture to your hair, he or she is actually shaving off part of the protective, which can leave your hair weakened and vulnerable. Instead, ask your stylist to use texturizing shears, which will give a similar effect without the damage.

  • Deep condition your hair once a week using a hair mask. Apply to damp hair, then wrap a large sheet of aluminum foil around your head and stand under your blow dryer for five minutes, then rinse out. The foil will intensify the heat and boost the conditioning treatment.

  • When you're done blowdrying your hair, finish up with a blast of cold air to close your hair shaft and lock in moisture.

  • Use a shine-enhancing gloss once a month. Apply the gloss to wet hair after shampooing, then rinse out after five minutes.
