Most of us have tried bangs at one time or another during our lifetime… and some of us have lived to regret it. Unfortunately, it can take up to a full year to completely grow them out, including some very awkward, in-between stages! But there are some tricks of the trade you can use to help you grow out gracefully.
Upkeep
Although it may sound counterintuitive, your bangs need to be trimmed while they grow in order to ensure a smooth transition. If you have blunt bangs, have your stylist trim them at an angle once they reach the bottom of your eyebrows to frame your face softly. Be sure to continue to get your hair trimmed every six weeks and at every cut, have your stylist angle the rest of the hair around your face up to meet your bangs while trimming an additional quarter inch off the back to even out the overall length.
Grow in Stages
Try letting the top layer of your bangs grow out while you keep the under layer short. Start by separating your bangs into two different horizontal sections, and allow the top section to grow out, using clips and other styling tools to tame them during awkward lengths. Meanwhile, keep the bottom section trimmed to just above your eyes. When the top section is completely merged into the rest of your hair, begin growing out the bottom section. Although this method may take a little more time, it's a bit more subtle than a simultaneous grow-out.
Style
Styling is the key to managing awkward bangs. If your hair is coarse and wavy, use a dab of pomade to weigh down and control your bangs. If you have fine hair, use just a little bit of gel to shape them and control flyaways. Once your bangs are long enough, use styling lotion and a round brush to style your hair up and back so it falls in a sexy wave. If you usually part your hair in the middle, consider trying a side part to draw attention away from your bangs.
Think Color
Although color can help give your hair a boost when you're growing out your bangs, beware of highlights, which can look like zebra stripes. Try a subtle vegetable rinse instead or balayage (fine strands of color) a few shades lighter than your normal color. Concentrate color on the tips of your bangs, which will draw the eye down and make them look longer.
Accessorize
Lucky for you, hair accessories are in right now, so clip back your strands with a couple of feminine bobby pins or pull it all back with a headband.
