Maternity Wear - When to Buy and Proper Sizing

As your baby grows and your belly expands, you'll eventually need to venture into the world of maternity fashion. Fortunately, that doesn't necessarily mean sacrificing your style. In fact, most maternity lines today are redesigned versions of the hottest runway fashions. With trendier maternity styles and more available options, you'll have no problem creating an attractive and comfortable wardrobe that will fit your body and flatter your features throughout your pregnancy.

Every woman grows out of her pre-pregnancy clothes and must make the transition into maternity clothes at a different time. Women who are expecting their second or third baby or carrying multiples may need to start wearing maternity clothes earlier than a first time mother.

In general, you should resist the temptation to buy maternity clothes the moment you find out you're pregnant. It will be a few weeks before your body starts to change and by then that must-have maternity dress might be yesterday's news. You may also grow tired of those tops you bought before you grow big enough to begin wearing them. Instead, make due with your existing wardrobe in the first few weeks before your body starts to change. Pull out those items you've stashed in the back of your closet because they were "a little big;" they will give you some room to grow without breaking your bank account.

Another option to consider when your regular clothes are too snug but you're not yet ready for maternity clothing is purchasing a few pairs of comfortable non-maternity pants and tops a size or two larger than you usually wear. Remember, you'll not only be slipping on these oversized clothes during your in-between weeks, but also in the weeks or months after the baby's born.

When you're ready to buy maternity wear - usually in the middle of your second trimester - pick out clothing and styles that you would choose to wear even if you weren't pregnant. Purchase just a few pieces at a time so you don't overestimate or underestimate your size months from now. This will ensure you come home with a wardrobe that can accommodate your changing body. This method also forces you to go shopping more often - as though we needed an excuse!

Most maternity clothes come in small, medium, or large. If you're accustomed to numerical sizes, look for size charts that are based on your pre-pregnancy measurements. Many stores also have pregnancy pillows that will give you an idea of what you may look like in a few weeks or months.

Consider form fitting clothes that flaunt your beautiful body and accentuate the features that make you special. Don't be afraid to show off those curves or a little skin with maternity clothes that will make you look and feel great throughout your entire pregnancy.
