Great skin is the basis for a beautiful face and flawless makeup. So what are you to do if you weren't born with model-quality skin? Here's how to create a perfect complexion:

Exfoliate. Makeup will not stay on if it is applied over dead skin cells. To create a palate of glowing fresh skin, use a gentle exfoliating scrub in the morning followed by an oil-free moisturizer. Let the moisturizer absorb into the skin for a few minutes before applying your makeup to avoid diluting your foundation.

Don't overdo the foundation. If you use a liquid base, be sure to apply only a light layer. A thick layer won't cover any better or last longer, it will just make your skin look cakey and dry. Remember: foundation's only purpose is to even out skin tone, not conceal.

Cover imperfections. Choose a concealer that matches your skin tone and apply it over your foundation. The drier the concealer, the longer it will stay on your skin, so stay away from liquid concealers (*Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage is my personal favorite). Avoid applying the concealer with your fingers, which can spread oil to your skin and cause breakouts; instead, use a flat brush, which will apply the concealer thinner, smoother, and more evenly. Because most concealers are thick, be sure to rub a bit on the back of your hand with the flat brush to warm and soften it before applying to your face. After applying the concealer to a blemish or other area on your face, always remember to blend the edges to avoid splotchy, uneven coloration.

Avoid cream-based blushes. Use powder formulas whenever possible because cream-based blushes are more likely to run, especially on oily skin. But if you can't live without cream blushes, go with cream-to-powder types, which blend well and will stay put. Try applying the blush to the apples of your cheeks, set it with a translucent powder, and finish with just a bit of bronzer.
