Your beauty regimen may be fine for today, but your skin's elasticity and tone changes as you age and your makeup and beauty treatments should change accordingly. Here are some tips to help you choose products and colors that will protect, enhance, and flatter you at any age.
In Your 20s...
If you're still experiencing breakouts, choose a cleansing product with salicylic acid. But don't forgo daily moisturizing because you think it'll make you break out more. Moisturizing will actually prevent blemishes. Skin that isn't moisturized produces more oil, which leads to breakouts. When choosing a face lotion, avoid pore-clogging ingredients such as petroleum and lanolin. Instead, look for alpha or beta hydroxy acid, which will help exfoliate your skin and make it appear brighter.
This is the time to get in the habit of protecting your skin from the sun every day. Sun damage can lead to premature wrinkles, sunspots and even skin cancer. To protect you and your skin, use a moisturizer with SPF 15 every day. If you're going to be spending a lot of time outdoors, apply a sunscreen with a higher SPF in the morning.
Take advantage of your youthful glow and show it off with minimal makeup. Cover up any breakouts with a good concealer and top with a reflective foundation and a bronze-hued blush that will enhance and show off your youthful radiance. Your lips are the plumpest they'll ever get, so show them off with luscious berry shades that have a touch of shine.
In Your 30s...
Antioxidants may help protect and repair skin from daily sun and pollution damage, so choose products that contain ingredients such as green tea, vitamins C and E, grapeseed extract and soy.
Creams and serums that contain retinol or Renova, the synthetic versions of vitamin A, will help smooth any emerging wrinkles. But vitamin A derivatives such as these are unsafe to use during pregnancy, so wait until after you deliver to take advantage of this wrinkle-fighter.
To perk up tired skin after a sleepless night, pair a tinted moisturizer with light-reflecting concealer and avoid overly bright or harsh colors and instead choose warm earth tones and neutrals. A soft peach blush will give you a healthy glow, even on your worst days. Don't apply eyeliner or mascara on your lower lash line, which will draw attention to lines or bags under your eyes; instead, apply a coat of mascara to the top lashes and dab a sheer powder or eye gloss over lids.
Use a lash-building mascara to brighten eyes and make them appear wide awake, even if you aren't. Hold the wand at the base of your upper lashes for a few seconds before sweeping it through to tips. This will deposit more mascara at your roots and have the same effect as liner, in half the time.
In Your 40s...
Your skin may be alternately dry and broken out in your 40s as your estrogen levels fluctuate. However, your favorite acne-fighting products from your teenage years can exacerbate dryness and cause redness and blotchiness; so instead, use an ultra-rich cleansing product and an anti-wrinkle moisturizer with retinol (again, save the retinol products until after your baby is born). In addition, hydroxy acids will slough off dull surface skin, giving you a smoother, more radiant appearance. They can also help to lighten age spots and smooth roughness.
The skin around your eyes is more delicate and thin, so it dries out more quickly and will show any fine lines and wrinkles, so daily moisturizing is critical. Use a hydrating eye cream with SPF every day and a nourishing formula for night.
A hydrating foundation will help even out your skin tone, just make sure it has SPF 15. Skip heavy eyeliner and eye shadow, which can draw attention to crow's feet and use a peachy blush to give your face warmth and subtle color. Restore volume to lips with lip-plumping products that contain marine extracts. Finish your look with a shimmering lipstick to make lips look full but not garish.
