Big, bright, beautiful eyes are alluring and undeniably sexy, so play them up with this season's hottest makeup techniques and colors. These simple tips will take you from fresh-faced to come-hither in the blink of an eye:
- Start Clean - Remove any residual mascara or liner by holding a cotton ball or pad saturated with a gentle makeup remover on your lash line for a few seconds, and then rubbing downward gently.
- Moisturize - Using a cotton swab, apply a pea-size drop of SPF-containing eye cream to still-damp skin to lock in moisture. Using this application method will prevent bacteria from being spread to your eye area by your fingers.
- Eyes Come First - When applying makeup, do your eyes first so if you make a mistake, you don't have to wash your whole face to start over. Also, your eyes will set the tone for the rest of your makeup, whether it's dramatic, natural, or smoky.
- Conceal Creases - To prevent creasing, apply a thin layer of concealer or use a primer base before applying eye shadow.
- Best Brows - For the most natural look, keep your brows full and just pluck the obvious stray hairs. Also, your brow arch should line up with the outside edge of your iris.
- Brush it On - Use a makeup brush with shorter bristles to line and define your eyes; it will give you more control and accuracy. Use longer-bristled ones to blend colors and create sheer effects.
- Shadow Colors Explained - When you buy a shadow set with four colors, use the darkest hue to define your lash lines and the lightest to highlight your brow bones. Use the second palest color all over your lids, and then define the crease with the medium tone.
- Modern Metals - For a modern, yet smoldering look, check out this season's hot metallic shadows. Try applying iridescent plum all over your lids and in your inner corners, adding a deep bronze color to your crease and under your lower lashes.
- Curl It Up - Curling your lashes makes your eyes look larger and more open. Using a lash curler, squeeze once at the roots and then again at the middle. To give your lashes extra curl, try a heated curler.
- Prime Lashes - Apply a coat of lash primer that contains lash-fattening fibers before applying your mascara to add lots of lush thickness to your lashes.
- Line for Depth - To make your lashes look denser, dot a brown or black liner pencil along your upper lash lines from underneath. Be careful to get the color just between your lashes.
- Go False - False lashes have come along way since the raccoon look of the 60s. They are easier to use and can create a dramatic, yet natural, look. For a more subtle effect, stick a few individual lashes on your outer corners or trim a full set down to match your natural lash length.
- Get the Red Out - While occasional use of redness-reducing eye drops can return the white to your eyes, regular use can actually cause the blood vessels to dilate, causing more redness. To make your eyes look whiter, apply flesh-toned liner along the inner rims of your lower lids.
- Lighten Up - To diminish the appearance of dark undereye circles, use an eye cream that contains vitamins K or C and a concealer that's one shade brighter than your skin tone.
- Reduce Puffiness - To reduce puffiness, soak a washcloth in cold milk and place it on your eyes for 15 minutes. The lactic acid in the milk will reduce swelling. Also try eye gels that contain swelling reducers such as caffeine.
